How to Choose the Right Skip Size for Your Project
Ordering the wrong skip size is one of the most common mistakes people make. Too small, and you end up paying for a second skip or multiple trips to the tip. Too large, and you waste money on capacity you never use.
This guide covers the skip sizes available for hire in Norfolk, what each size is suited for, and how to estimate your waste volume accurately.
Skip Sizes at a Glance
Skip sizes are measured in cubic yards. A cubic yard is roughly the size of a standard washing machine. Here is a quick comparison of the main skip sizes available:
| Size | Dimensions (approx) | Bin Bag Equivalent | Best For |
| 2 Yard | 1.3m x 1.9m x 1.0m | 20-25 bags | Small clearouts, single room |
| 4 Yard | 1.6m x 2.5m x 1.1m | 40-50 bags | Bathroom refit, garden tidy |
| 6 Yard | 1.8m x 3.5m x 1.1m | 60-70 bags | Kitchen refit, small builds |
| 8 Yard | 1.8m x 3.7m x 1.3m | 80-90 bags | Large renovation, house clearance |
| 10 Yard | 1.8m x 3.3m x 1.5m | 100-110 bags | Major clearance, light waste only |
| 12 Yard | 1.8m x 4.0m x 1.8m | 120-140 bags | Commercial clearance, light waste |
Important: Larger skips (10 and 12 yard) are not suitable for heavy materials like soil, rubble, or concrete. Their extra height makes them too heavy to lift safely when filled with dense waste.
Detailed Skip Size Guide
2 Yard Mini Skip
The smallest option, ideal when space is tight or waste volume is limited. Dimensions are approximately 1.3m wide x 1.9m long x 1.0m high.
Typical uses: Clearing a single room, small garage clearout, minor garden waste removal, bathroom strip-out (fixtures only, not tiles and rubble).
Capacity: Approximately 20-25 bin bags of waste.
4 Yard Midi Skip
The most popular size for domestic projects. Features a drop-end door for easier loading. Dimensions are approximately 1.6m wide x 2.5m long x 1.1m high.
Typical uses: Bathroom renovation, kitchen clearout, medium garden clearance, decluttering multiple rooms, shed demolition.
Capacity: Approximately 40-50 bin bags of waste.
6 Yard Builder’s Skip
The standard choice for construction and renovation work. This is the largest size suitable for soil disposal. Dimensions are approximately 1.8m wide x 3.5m long x 1.1m high.
Typical uses: Kitchen refit with flooring removal, extension groundwork, driveway excavation, small demolition projects, large garden landscaping.
Capacity: Approximately 60-70 bin bags of waste.
8 Yard Extra Large Skip
Suited to larger projects where significant waste volume is expected. Features a drop-end door. Dimensions are approximately 1.8m wide x 3.7m long x 1.3m high.
Typical uses: Full house renovation, large house clearance (including furniture), commercial fit-out, roofing projects.
Capacity: Approximately 80-90 bin bags of waste.
Note: Not suitable for soil or rubble-only loads.
10 Yard and 12 Yard Skips
These larger skips provide maximum capacity for bulky, lightweight waste. The 10-yard measures approximately 1.8m wide x 3.3m long x 1.5m high. The 12-yard measures approximately 1.8m wide x 4.0m long x 1.8m high.
Typical uses: Large-scale commercial clearances, office refurbishments, retail fit-outs, warehouse clearouts, event clean-ups.
Restriction: These skips cannot be used for dense materials such as soil, concrete, bricks, or rubble. The extra height creates weight issues when filled with heavy waste.
What is the Right Skip for Your Project?
Home Renovation Projects
Renovation waste varies significantly depending on the scope of work. A bathroom refit typically generates enough waste for a 4-yard skip : old tiles, fixtures, plasterboard, and flooring.
Kitchen renovations usually require a 6-yard skip, particularly if you are removing flooring, wall tiles, and old units. If the project includes structural work or you are renovating multiple rooms simultaneously, an 8-yard skip is more appropriate.
Garden Clearances
Garden waste is often bulky but relatively light. A general tidy-up with hedge trimmings, weeds, and small shrubs typically fits in a 2-yard or 4-yard skip.
Larger landscaping projects involving tree removal, fence panels, decking, or shed demolition will require at least a 6-yard skip. If you are excavating soil for a patio, pond, or driveway, remember that the 6-yard is the maximum size for soil disposal.
Commercial and Construction Work
Commercial projects typically generate higher waste volumes and often require ongoing waste management. For construction sites, demolition work, or large-scale refurbishments, roll-on/roll-off skips ranging from 20 to 40 yards provide the capacity needed.
For smaller commercial jobs like office clearances, shop refits, or warehouse tidies, an 8, 10, or 12-yard skip usually provides sufficient capacity. A wait-and-load service can also work well for commercial clients who need rapid turnaround.
How to Estimate Your Waste Volume
Estimating waste volume accurately prevents overspending or needing a second skip. Here are practical ways to gauge your requirements:
Count bin bags: If you have already bagged up waste, count the bags. A 2-yard skip holds roughly 20-25 bags, a 4-yard holds 40-50, and so on.
Measure the area: For room clearances, consider the floor area and the density of items. A cluttered single bedroom typically generates 2-3 cubic yards of waste.
Consider material weight: Heavy materials like soil, concrete, and bricks take up less space but add significant weight. A 6-yard skip filled with soil will be at maximum weight capacity long before it appears full.
When in doubt, go one size up: The cost difference between skip sizes is often modest. Ordering a slightly larger skip is usually cheaper than hiring a second smaller one.
What Cannot Go in a Skip
Certain materials are prohibited from skip disposal due to safety or environmental regulations. These include: asbestos, tyres, gas canisters, paint and solvents, batteries, electrical equipment, plasterboard (must be separated), and hazardous chemicals.
If you are unsure whether an item can go in your skip, check the special wastes page or contact us before booking.
Tips for Efficient Skip Use
Load flat items first. Place boards, doors, and sheet materials at the bottom to create a stable base.
Break down bulky items. Flatten cardboard boxes, dismantle furniture, and cut long timber to maximise space.
Fill gaps. Use smaller items and rubble to fill voids between larger objects.
Do not overfill. Waste must not exceed the top edge of the skip. Overfilled skips cannot be collected safely.
