Tight Access? We Deliver On Narrow Norfolk Streets

Terraced streets, tight village lanes, parked cars and low trees can make skip delivery tricky. Our experienced drivers handle narrow access every day, placing skips safely without fuss. We’ll always assess risk, protect surfaces and keep your neighbours in mind.

Norman Wenn Skip Hire covers Norwich, Taverham, Wymondham, Swaffham, East Tuddenham and surrounding villages. With over 30 years’ local know-how, we offer quick delivery, prompt collections and affordable skip hire from a trusted local skip company. For our story and values, see about us. If you need Norwich skip hire or Norfolk skip hire on a tight street, we’re here to help.

Measure Up Before You Book

Check the narrowest point from the main road to your chosen drop spot. Aim for at least 3.0 m clear width and 4.0 m height. Watch for low branches, cables, archways and tight pinch points. Our lorry needs around 9–10 m in length to position and unload.

Note any steep slopes, soft verges or fragile surfaces. Please move cars on delivery day and keep the route clear. Unsure? Send photos or a short video and we’ll advise. For simple preparation steps, see prepare your property for skip delivery. It makes delivery smoother and safer.

Safe Positioning On Terraced Streets

Off-road is best. A driveway or hardstanding keeps skips out of the way and avoids permits. For small front gardens, use sturdy boards to protect surfaces and never cover drains or inspection covers.

If the skip must go on the road, you’ll usually need a council permit. Keep junctions, bus stops and pedestrian crossings clear, and do not block pavements. We’ll use cones and lights so the skip is visible at night. Read our guide: Norfolk skip permits kerbside hire guide.

Pick The Right Skip Size For Small Spaces

For tight spots, our 2 yard mini and 4 yard midi skips are easiest to place. A 6 yard builder’s skip can fit many terraces if access and positioning allow. As a guide, a 2 yard skip is compact (around 1.5 m long), a 4 yard is still small, and a 6 yard has a longer footprint suited to bigger jobs.

On narrow lanes, 8–12 yard skips may be unsuitable, and 10–12 yard sizes are for light waste only (not soil or hardcore). Typical uses: 2 yard for small clear-outs, 4 yard for bathroom rip-outs or garden waste, 6 yard for heavier renovations. For comparisons, see which skip for which job: a guide to skip sizes.

No Room Outside? Practical Alternatives That Work

If your street is too tight, we can often place a smaller skip at the nearest wider section. Move waste by barrow or sacks, and we’ll plan swap-overs to minimise disruption. Clear signage and quick loading windows keep traffic flowing.

When a skip won’t work, tip direct at our licensed site in East Tuddenham. It’s quick and cost-effective if you have transport. See details: waste transfer station. For larger sites with space, we also supply roll-on/off skips for efficient bulk waste removal.

Permits And Parking Suspensions In Norfolk

Any on-road placement or controlled parking bay usually needs a council permit. Busy streets may also require a parking suspension. We’ll advise what’s needed for your location and handle the paperwork where possible.

Allow several working days for approvals. Fees and rules vary by local authority. You’ll need cones, reflective markings and lights so the skip stays visible at night. If you’re new to the process, start with our Norfolk skip permits kerbside hire guide.

Neighbour-Friendly And Safe Setups

Protect soft ground with timber boards and avoid blocking drives or shared access. Let neighbours know your delivery window and, if possible, avoid school-run times. Keep pavements clear and sightlines open.

Load safely: do not overfill; keep waste level with the sides; put heavy waste in first; separate plasterboard if advised; and never put hazardous items in the skip. Cover the load in windy weather and keep lights on at night. For accepted and prohibited items, see what you can and can’t put in a skip.

What Happens To Your Waste

Tight Access FAQs

What is the minimum access width and height?

We need around 3.0 m clear width and 4.0 m height. Please check the narrowest point, including gates, parked cars, low branches and cables.

Can you lift a skip over a wall or hedge?

No. We cannot lift over walls, fences or hedges, and we cannot park across pavements. We need safe, direct access on firm, level ground.

How long can I keep a skip on a terraced street?

Typical hire periods are flexible, but kerbside permits may set time limits. Tell us your plan and we’ll match a hire length that suits.

What if cars block access on delivery day?

Please arrange parking space in advance and speak to neighbours. If access is blocked, we may wait briefly or rearrange delivery; extra charges can apply.

Do you deliver at weekends or bank holidays?

Availability varies and lead times are longer around bank holidays. Book early for weekend or peak periods and we’ll confirm what’s possible.

Do I need to be at home for delivery?

Not always. If placement is agreed in advance and access is clear, we can deliver. Being present helps on tight streets and avoids delays.
